Jindřich Štreit at Hotel Devín
JINDŘICH ŠTREIT AT HOTEL DEVÍN****
The name of Professor Štreit is known to anybody interested in photography. His rich and extremely interesting life is a model for many photographers. He is one of the storytellers who do not need to be asked questions; all you have to do is to listen. This interview, which is not even an interview because a single question was asked, is an exact transcript of the recording, which did not need to be interfered with in any way.
Hotel Devín: Mr. Štreit, we are very honoured you have been returning to our hotel. Please tell us your – our hotel story.
Jindřich Štreit: I live in such a small village, in North Moravia, it is called Sovinec. It is a village with 15 inhabitants, but it is in a beautiful landscape. It is located at the beginning of the Low Jeseník Mountains, lies in a kind of crater and there are hills around it. And in the crater there is also a salient on which a beautiful medieval castle stands. The castle has a long history, dating back to the 12th century, but unfortunately in 1945, after passing through the front, the Russians burned it down. There was a French prisoner-of-war camp.

However, the castle with the landscape is extremely romantic. It is really one of the most beautiful places in the world that I have ever known, except for Hotel Devín****. As a person lives in such a beautiful village, every trip to the countryside or another place is an experience for them. That’s why I love going to Bratislava as well. Shortly after the revolution, in ’90, my daughter started studying here. At that time, she studied at the Academy of Performing Arts under Professor Jurkovič.

When she was studying in Bratislava, I used to come here often, and at that time, thanks to Tibor Huszár, I was discovered by Jana Garvoldtová and practically from the beginning of Slovak Press Photo she invited me to the jury. Today it is the 12th year and I have always stayed here in a hotel. I am fascinated by the view from the window; Sovinec does not have a river, only such a stream. The Danube and the surrounding area with a bridge and boats is a great experience for me. Moreover, the hotel is in the immediate vicinity of the Slovak National Gallery, which makes me very happy, because I work with the gallery a lot and I had my life’s exhibitions there. For my 60th birthday, I had such a retrospective exhibition there.
Every time I visit Bratislava, I stop there to greet my friends. The interconnection of the city, the river and the intellectual gallery puts Hotel Devín in such a beautiful connection with everything I can get to know and experience here in Bratislava. The hotel is very pleasant, it is literally a pleasure to stay here and spend several nights, so it is always such a great holiday for me. It’s a pleasure to come for breakfast and to get everything it has to offer. I also like the fact it is a hotel with tradition. The architecture and decoration is in the classicist style, a kind of hotel classic. After the Velvet Revolution, I had the opportunity to travel a lot for photo exhibitions; I got to know a number of hotels from Japan through China, all European countries to Brazil. But Hotel Devín reigns supreme over all these hotels.

Hotel Devín: Mr. Štreit, thank you for these beautiful words and we will look forward to seeing you next time. Maybe we will learn another small snippet of your interesting life if you have the time to tell us.
